Each year, the Development Core sponsors an multi-session Manuscript Writing Workshop. The Workshop is held in two parts.

  • Part I consists of three overview sessions exploring general issues in the field of academic writing and publishing, and including a question and answer session with senior HIV Center investigators. Part I also provides guidance to participants in Part II about the analysis of the data that they will use in Part II.
  • Part II consists of six sessions of applied work on a specific manuscript. Participants in this part should be in the process of, or ready to, write up the results of data analyses. Specifically, they must have identified a topic of interest, conducted a literature review sufficient to justify the relevance of the topic, developed an analysis plan, and conducted the data analyses prior to the workshop. Participants using qualitative data need to have completed data coding and analysis.
  • Each week, a different section of the manuscript is written and circulated to other participants. Participants provide feedback to and receive feedback from other members. Outside of the workshop, participants also have consultations with mentors and/or co-authors. At the end of the workshop, participants have completed a first draft of their manuscripts! Part II of the workshop is limited to 6 participants, to be selected on the basis of their readiness to begin writing.

Prospective participants should complete an application and send it to Susie Hoffman. Those who are employed at the HIV Center full-time will need the permission of their mentor/supervisor to participate. Fellows need to have their mentor sign off on the application. An intake interview will be conducted with each applicant to Part II of the workshop to identify needed preparation and ensure registration, so submit your application early to secure a space.
