Iván C. Balán, Ph.D. is
a clinical psychologist and researcher at the New York State Psychiatric
Institute, where he splits his time between the HIV Center for Clinical and
Behavioral Studies and the Anxiety Disorders Clinic. A junior researcher, he
brings to his work extensive clinical experience, primarily with ethnic
minority inner-city populations.
At the HIV Center, Dr. Balán has served as
co-investigator on a number of studies exploring sexual risk behavior among men
who have sex with men (MSM). Currently, he is co-investigator and project
manager of a study assessing predictors of HIV risk behavior among MSM in
Buenos Aires, Argentina. His research interests lie in understanding the
relationship between mental health and HIV risk behavior, particularly among
ethnic minority MSM.
At the Anxiety Disorders Clinic, Dr. Balán's
work has focused on developing culturally appropriate assessment instruments
and interventions for Latinos, and more recently, the development of manualized
interventions for the treatment of pathological gambling.
Dr. Balán is also a member of the Motivational
Interviewing Network of Trainers and provides consultation and training in
organizations around cross-cultural competence.
