last update: 10/1/07

Since coming to the HIV Center in 2002, Dr. Dworkin's research centers on how gender inequalities and privileges shape HIV risks. Her work focuses on gender, power, and the distribution and control of economic resources in heterosexual relationships, the relationship between structural and interpersonal power, and how these factors differentially impact women's and men's HIV risks. She also examines how sociocultural practices, including sexual scripts, are enacted and can be changed to modify HIV risks. Her current and future research fleshes out the relationship between sexual and economic empowerment and she seeks to intervene on HIV/AIDS vulnerabilities through integrated microenterprise and HIV/AIDS prevention programs. Dr. Dworkin is author or coauthor of several articles and chapters on gender, sexuality, and the body, is on the editorial board for Social Problems, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and Gender & Society, and remains an active reviewer for several health, sociological, sexuality, and gender-related journals.
