(from abstract)

The specific study aims are to

  1. Explore public sector health care providers’/counseling staff’s knowledge and understanding of MC as an HIV prevention tool, including the concept of partial efficacy, proven efficacy for men only, and the mistrust of information regarding its scientific efficacy, safety, and potential adverse effects.
  2. Determine how knowledge, understanding, and trust in the efficacy of MC, including understanding of the concept of partial protection and protection for men only, are associated with intentions to become circumcised or have male children circumcised, as well as anticipated future risk behavior, such as condom use, after circumcision among men attending public sector health clinics.
  3. Determine how knowledge, understanding, and trust in the efficacy of MC, including understanding of the concept of partial protection and protection for men only, are associated with support for partner and male child circumcision among women attending public sector health clinics.
  4. Develop an evidence-based MC Counseling Tool that will assist health care providers in counseling clients about the benefits and limitations of MC using participatory methodology.
