Gender-Specific Interventions for Women and their Male Partners

Grant Title: Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network: NY/Long Island Region

Funding Source and Project Period: NIDA POMH43520; 2009 - 2012

Key Personnel:

Principal Investigator: Edward Nunes, M.D..
Co-Principal Investigator: Susan Tross, Ph.D.

Project Overview:

The Clinical Trials Network was established in 1999 under a cooperative agreement and involves the Center for the Clinical Trials Network at NIDA, 16-university based notes, a Coordinating Center, a Statistics Center, and more than 100 Community Treatment Programs. The mission is to conduct multi-site clinical trials to determine the effectiveness of drug abuse treatment interventions in diverse community-based treatment settings and diverse patient populations, and to transfer research results to treatment programs, clinicians, and their patients to improve the quality of drug abuse treatment throughout the nation.

Under Dr. Tross, an effectiveness trial of an HIV/STD risk reduction intervention for women in 12 substance abuse treatment programs was conducted in the CTN. As reported in JAIDS (Tross, et al, 2008), a significant reduction in sexual risk behavior, in the sexual risk reduction intervention (versus HIV education), was observed at six months. Secondary analyses are being conducted.
