It's Like This
IT'S LIKE THIS, a video from the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, focuses on the impact of HIV on women and their families. The video highlights such issues as response to an HIV+ diagnosis, disclosure, coping, partner response, family support and communication, and the responses of children to a parent with HIV/AIDS.

Gladys, pregnant, living with her partner, James, and her two sons by a previous relationship, has been diagnosed as HIV+. The video begins with a phone call from Gladys' sister Cynthia who wants to know the results of the test and if Gladys is ok. She lies to her sister. James arrives home and Gladys accuses him of infecting her and killing her and maybe the baby. He tells her he will have an HIV test and tries to calm her. Gladys and James battle the impact of HIV on their relationship. The story continues as Gladys tries to cope with the events in her life and the death of James. She struggles with disclosing her status to her mother and sister and eventually Darrell, age 14, and Robert, age 8. The final scenes show Gladys looking toward the future and finding hope, "I still have dreams. They're just different now."
IT'S LIKE THIS is designed for use by clinicians working with women, children, their partners, and families coping with HIV. The video provides a sense of hope and future direction, as well as a stimulus to promote discussion of the issues faced by women and their families.
