Theo Sandfort, PhDMember, Development CoreEmail: tgs2001@cumc.columbia.eduTheo Sandfort is trained as a social psychologist. His area of research is the well-being of sexual and gender minorities. Dr. Sandfort has directed and conducted research studying determinants of HIV risk in gay and bisexual men, sexual risk and health status in HIV-infected persons, and HIV prevention in the general population. In addition, he has conducted quantitative and qualitative research on sexual orientation and mental health, sexual orientation and gender-role identity; gay and lesbian stigma, discrimination, and quality of life; and the role of health care providers in STI prevention and sexual counseling. He was one of the first to study HIV and men who have sex with men in South Africa. He was the protocol-chair of HPTN 075 "Characterizing the Feasibility of HIV Prevention Cohort Studies among MSM in Sub-Saharan Africa." He has published widely on his topic of research. In the Division of Gender, Sexuality and Health, he was involved in directing and implementing the postdoctoral training program "Behavioral Sciences Research in HIV Infection" from 2003 to 2024.
